Thoughts on Bird Flu

December 19, 2007

After having a rather nasty dream about Bird Flu, I woke up this morning feeling very unsettled.  Is it just me or is there actually more human to human transmissions going on?

I am concerned and thinking about the clusters in Pakistan, China, Indonesia and other places.  I have to ask myself how much of this is going to be covered up?  Now we know that when there was human to human transmission before, it was covered up for almost a year.  So should things be different now?  I don’t think so.

My dream was harsh, so harsh that I will not write about it but I knew when awakened this morning that H5N1 is on the move and no matter what we do we will not be able to stop it.  Can it be stalled for a bit ?  Yes, stop it? NO.  I also know it is mutating once again and getting easier to spread to humans.  Are we losing the battle here against bird flu?  Unfortunately, yes we are.

I know there are surges in winter and that the death rate is claimed to be lower this year but I’m sorry, I do not hold any faith in the numbers being touted out there.  Too many people were buried before ever being tested. Too many people were not diagnosed with H5N1 though died from high fevers etc without the “OFFICIAL” notification of it being bird flu so these people cannot be on the list.  What is the real number of human deaths from bird flu? Who knows as we are being given the numbers to keep the count low and no one who dies from H5N1 or dies being suspected of it can be on the list as it is not “CONFIRMED.”  Should we believe the list? No and we should also not believe the current death rate of around 60 percent since it is probably higher.  Take 2007 with 77 confirmed cases and 51 deaths being reported.  Take 51 and divide it by 77 it equals to: 66 percent.  In 2006 there were 115 cases with 79 deaths which makes it 68.6 percent.  If you take Indonesia, the hardest hit country with 115 reported cases and 93 confirmed deaths, the calculated death rate is 80 percent.  Not pretty numbers.

With the increased numbers of human clusters, sources being harder to track where the H5N1 came from and more human to human transmission of the illness, I believe that the current phase of pandemic should be raised to a level 4. But then again what do I know. Here I have resigned myself to the fact that the avian flu pandemic is going to happen.  I will watch the bloggers and science sites for information since they seem to be the most reliable sources for info out there.  Why are they reliable? Because they care and really want to help people to prepare for the H5N1 pandemic in order to save lives.  There is nothing else in it for them. I personally applaud them for their time, effort, honesty and endurance.

Bird Flu Vanishes??

November 30, 2007

Have I missed something here or did the H5N1 virus suddenly just go away in Indonesia?  According to Mizzina News, there is a cover up of the bird flu in Shan State located in Myanmar (Burma),  near India.  They report that the bird flu is spreading fast there and it is being purposely concealed. They further report that some of the officials are taking bribes from the farm owners to not cull their flu stricken birds.  www.mizzina.com

This report is very troubling and I have to wonder if something similar is going on in Indonesia.  The pattern has been, months of people being infected and bird flu deaths were reported almost every ten days to during these past few weeks the H5N1 virus suddenly vanishes?  News about this virus has been too quiet lately. Is information being withheld because of the recent bird flu virus sample dispute?  How can this virus simply vanish? This is disturbing to think about because if it is true and information is being withheld in Indonesia then this poses a terrible risk to the whole world.

There are now five different forms of this H5N1 virus out there according to news reports. So is now really the time to stand back and play games with this dangerous thing?  I understand the position of the Government of Indonesia since they want to make sure they will get the vaccine when it is created but what if this thing mutates and no one knows it? I do not recall reading anywhere that Indonesia has been fully cleared of  H5N1. What is going on with this bird flu virus?

Personally, I find this frightening because this avian flu virus has mutated many times and is still doing so.  While we are on some sort of news blackout, it is possible that this virus could jump again and go into full pandemic form without anyone knowing it has happened.  With officials covering it up in some countries and no news from other countries about what is going on, this bird flu virus becomes an increasing deadly concern for most of the world.  It could sneak up, attack at any time and we may not see it coming.

Bird Flu Sharing Summit: Money versus value of humanity

November 25, 2007

This morning I read some of the items discussed at the Geneva Bird Flu Sharing summit and it made me want to throw up.  What does it all boil down to? Money of course as everyone is scared they are not going to get their financial share.

Article excerpts taken from:

(Final) Day 4 of flu virus sharing summit by Effect Measure  –

US Deletions and an insertion

While US and EU participation here are most notable for being totally devoid of any new ideas, deletions to text proposed last night (22 Nov) and this morning (23 Nov) say quite a bit about US intent. In discussion of principles with respect to intellectual property rights (i.e. patents), the US proposed to delete everything. According to the US, patents in influenza and influenza vaccines should be discussed elsewhere. This obviously did not meet with approval from other delegations, so the items were bracketed. But with so much support for the language raising concerns about patent claims on influenza, lifting some of the brackets was eventually proposed. Unbowed, the US replied “We are not today and essentially never prepared to remove brackets around whole items.”

And last night (22 Nov), when it came to discussing benefits for developing countries from the WHO system, the US inserted “voluntary” around many kinds of benefits. Given the opportunity to remove “voluntary” today, the US insisted that it stay.

Notable Appearances

#1: Heretofore elusive Vietnam took the floor today and expressed support for proposals by Thailand and Indonesia. (Note this was a generalized expression of support, as there are nuances that separate the positions of the latter two.) In language similar to that of many other developing countries, Vietnam asked for urgent development of a new system for virus access and equitable sharing of benefits based on sovereign rights of member states.

#2: India, which has also been quiet, waded into the fray as well and expressed its displeasure with the current system’s inequities, especially patent claims. India’s proposals on virus sharing were aimed, it said, to ensure that “/nobody takes more than their share of the benefits and takes away from the rights of the contributors /[of viruses].”

#3 And China, which has been engaged but not overly talkative, piped up more on Friday morning, in particular, advocating technology transfer and establishment of WHO Collaborating Centers in developing countries. (Full disclosure: China would like to have a CC itself.)

I read this article over and over this morning and was appalled.  Everyone is so worried about the patents ( demand of ownership and legal maneuvering to secure profits) for this darned avian flu virus that something is getting lost in this equation, the people.  Come on, their families are at risk from this thing too, no one is bullet proof here.  How is this summit to be considered a success when all that has been accomplished was fighting and squabbling over who gets the most and who is going to get their fair share. I am clueless.

I don’t know,  maybe I am wrong here as I felt the most important thing was to make sure people get the vaccine shots to be well, not who gets the most benefit from them.  I know money has to factor in someplace but should it be the most important factor? While they sit there and play their word games, mind games and scream about who is entitled to what, the H5N1 bird flu virus is spreading into more regions throughout the world and gaining strength.  Personally, I hope that they get their ducks in a row before it gets us all.

Bird Flu, the real facts?

November 5, 2007

Picture of bird flu corpse being removed from the hospital

Today I was reading about yet another death in Indonesia from the bird flu and I had to ask myself what is going on?

I started remembering the man in China who contracted the bird flu. Initially they did not know where he got it from. To this day we have not heard anything else about this man since.  I had to wonder what the actual death count of people from H5N1 is.  How many people fall into the category that they were buried before being tested or they do not know how they were infected. Next, all is quiet about the bird flu victims in the press and nothing more is written.

Then I thought about how many wrong diagnoses there may have been, how many bird flu infected people were not reported? How many others exist than those verified with tests actually have had the bird flu and counted on the list?  I even remember reading somewhere that they thought some of the people who had SARS may have actually died from H5N1, but have heard no more about this either.

It really made me wonder what is actually occurring.  How much do we honestly not know?  It was possible to keep human to human transmission out of the press for over a year (even though people suspected it was such). So what else is currently being kept out of the press ?

Now I have read a report where it can be passed human to human but only among close family members or people who are in really close contact.  Then I recalled hearing about two nurses who were suspected of getting the bird flu after taking care of a H5N1 infected patient. To date, I have heard no more about these nurses and what was their fate?

So what is the real truth?  How many people have had the bird flu and been omitted from the list?  How many actual cases of human to human transmission have there really been?  I remember a few like the mother who held her H5N1 infected young child as they died and got it, the uncle who cared for his niece in Iraq and got the bird flu from her, a few reported clusters in Indonesia. But still we are led to believe that there is just one.  There are also the some cases of people who contracted the bird flu though there were no H5N1 cases reported in their area. Somehow, all of these articles seem to come out then get swept silently under the carpet very fast.

Information is about this bird flu so scarce, scattered and censored.  Not a lot of what we read is the entire story.  I am glad there are many reporters out there who dig for the truth and try to get the news to the people.  Forget about causing a panic, just give us the facts.  Do I want to know what is really happening?  Yes, but will I? Probably not at least until the history books come out with its account of the facts on the H5N1.  However, even then we may never know the whole story.

Bird flu in children and the poor.

October 31, 2007

Today I was talking to a very poor person about the bird flu.  The lady burst into tears and told me that she can’t afford to stock up her house.  She asked me what she was going to do?  This lady told me she lives on food stamps and has very little extra money.  She has problems supporting her kids just to get by from month to month let alone trying to fill her house up with groceries.  This got me thinking about how many other people are in this shape.

When everything closes down and these people are hungry, what are they going to do?  There is no where for them to turn to and if a child is crying because they are so hungry, what parent on earth can tune out those cries?  History has proven that desperate needs lead to desperate acts.  People are being told to stock up for three days and that is not nearly enough to make it through a bird flu pandemic.

Babies will need formula, diapers, food and comfort.  Little children do not understand what is going on, they will want to eat, go to the park, go to school and play.  The avian flu is raging outside as people are being told to stay home with the military patrolling the streets.  While the kids scream for food, Mom and Dad are looking at bare shelves.  I can’t imagine the heart breaking pain that those parents would go through.  They are going to want to get food for their children no matter what the cost to themselves.  I would, as I could not stand to see my child go hungry or be in pain from needing life’s bare necessities and not having them.

In situations like this when people become desperate they will resort to desperate measures.  Hurricane Katrina showed us this as people kicked in store windows to get food and supplies.  They broke into gas stations, houses and started shooting at people from roof tops.  For them there was help coming but imagine when there is no help. There is no one going to come to the rescue and hope seems lost.

Bird Flu Vaccine or being prepared- which is the better plan?

October 26, 2007

Today I sat down to read the report from the government on how they plan to administer the vaccine when it comes out.  At first I was upset to find out that my son would fall at the bottom of the list since he is 13 years old, young and healthy.  But then I thought about it and asked myself does it really matter anyway?

I think the promise of this vaccine is to give people hope, something to hold on to when this bird flu pandemic thing hits.  I know that the vaccine will take about 6 months to make and there will be a very limited supply of it. I also know they can’t even start to manufacture an effective vaccine against the bird flu until the virus is in full swing.  Then there is the issue of the virus mutating again and again and again even while they are producing a vaccine for the current strain.  By the time they get this vaccine out to the general public the virus will have done its damage anyway.

No matter what we think, when push comes to shove on this H5N1 virus the reality is we will be on our own.  Being prepared and having a good plan will be the best measures to take, not the promise of a miracle drug that will show up some time or day during the course of the serious virus.  If we wait for this miracle drug, it may be by far too late.

I read another article today stating that they think the blood of the survivors from the 1918 Spanish flu may hold a key to helping with a cure for the H5N1.  Gee, I wrote the CDC over two years ago and brought up this idea.  I am just glad they are doing something with it even though they never answered my email about it. I don’t care, just go with it and see if this will work to save lives.

I am not going to argue with the government’s ideas of who is the most deserving to get a vaccine first and who should be last on the list. You can bet their families will get it no matter where they fall on the list but hey that is to be expected as it is just the way things are.  If I am still alive when it becomes my turn and my son is still alive, I will give him my vaccine shot.  I truly believe that the children are our future and personally I do not see them as expendable.  In the mean time, I will do everything I can think of to protect my family, my home and will get ready for this thing.  In the end when it does come down to the wire, the only person I have to depend on will be me. Because many other people will be depending on me as well, I will have to draw on every grace I can from God to get through these very hard times. The promised vaccine, well that is another story for another chapter in the bird flu saga and I personally will not hold my breath waiting on it.

Listen, Bird Flu is NEWS !

October 9, 2007

New recent findings indicate that the bird flu has mutated again and some strains of it have the capacity to go easily human to human. This report is posted at http://www.birdflubreakingnews.com/

Scientists Show Deadly Bird Flu Strain Is Evolving Toward Human To Human Form In a study published in the journal Public Library of Science Pathogens, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) reported that one key evolutionary step has already been achieved in new forms of the virus that are circulating in Africa and Europe.  Led by virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, the team has identified a single change in a protein on the surface of the virus that enables it to get a foothold in the cells of the upper respiratory system of mammals. The upper respiratory system is the nose and throat. This step is important because it gives the virus the ability to infect a wider range of cell types and also to spread via coughs and sneezes. However, it is not enough to make it fully contagious from mammal to mammal; other, as yet unknown, mutations would be necessary for that to happen. But Kawaoka and his team suspect that too is just a matter of time. Medical News Today

After reading this article and several others like it, I tried to approach people with the information.  I started with my daughter who blew it off.  I have tried a thousand times to talk to her about it. She gets angry and tells me that she will not deal with it until it is on her doorstep.  My daughter has even told her friends that I have gone over the edge with bird flu because I have stocked up my house to prepare for it.  She does not understand my concern as after all in her mind,  it can’t happen in this day and age. She will glare at me, tell me she does not want to hear about it and stomps off. I am hearing over and over again that if this bird flu was this serious then it would be all over the news.  This type of attitude is consistent with so many other people I talk to.  They do not believe it, do not want to hear about it and you are labeled nuts if you try to talk to them about this topic.  They point out to me that the bird flu is not major news or others would say they have not heard anything about it. Some have even said that perhaps this is something made up to try to get people to spend more money. But when this bird flu is at their doorstep, then what?

Whenever an effective vaccine becomes available, which will take several months of the flu circulating throughout the population, the vaccine will be administered as per a priority list. First the vaccine will be provided for Government, front line workers like nurses and doctors, then the military. Next will then be people who are in between the ages of 20-40 years old. After all of those are done, the rest of us get what is left and that is IF there are any vaccinations left. Current thinking is, the 20-40 years olds are the work force and the major contributors to society. So hey, a 5 year old, well they will not be added to the bottom line for years.

There are other questions to really think about. Will it even matter when they do get a vaccine?  Which strain of this bird flu will it cover?  How many mutations will have occurred while they are cultivating a vaccine for one strain? You may have a different form than the one I have.  Therefore, is this one vaccine really going to matter?  There will be millions dead before it even hits the market for one strain and then what about the new mutated ones. Think about it, new vaccines are needed for each strain as well.

My problem with this line of thought is that my grandchildren are in the “expendable” zone, so is my son who is 13, so am I and most of my family.  They are telling you not to even go to the hospitals as it is the worst place you can be.  As a mother who loves her children and a grandmother who loves her grandchildren, I do what I can do to inform them to help them save themselves.

We go through hurricanes here thus I have seen first hand panic runs.  Waiting until this is all over the news is way too late to do anything.  When we got the news that Hurricane Jennie and Francis were coming, there were major panic runs here.  Within a few hours, the shelves in the stores were all bare.  The gas stations started raising their prices and it cost me $30.00 for 6 D batteries.  In the aftermath, gas was really hard to get for weeks and it took almost a month for the stores to get back to normal operation again.  If we could have these kinds of problems from a hurricane then imagine what it will be like with a global flu pandemic when nothing is open and there is no place to buy anything.

When this does come, I believe most of the people will be angry for not being fully informed.  If they have the knowledge to know what is going on, how to prepare and are made more aware of this pandemic then they may have a chance to survive.  The media is a powerful tool and from what I am getting from people is, if it is not on the news then it is not happening.  I wonder when this bird flu takes the forefront of the news, how many people is it going to be too late for?  I wonder if my children are going to finally listen before it is too late. Or will they remain like about 80 percent of the population that does not understand this virus, has no clue what we are in for and have no idea of what to do.  Personally, I am going to do the right thing and increase my efforts to let as many people as I can know about this bird flu pandemic.  Even if people call you insane, or off the wall or whatever, who cares?  Talk about it, make people understand and save some lives out there.  Just one life saved is worth all the name calling in the universe.
