Update June 26, 2009: U.S. Passes Million Swine Flu Cases, Officials Say
Swine flu has infected more than a million Americans, federal health officials said Friday, and is infecting thousands more every week even though the annual flu season is well over.
Times Topics: Swine Flu (AH1N1 Virus)
That total of those who have already been infected is “just a ballpark figure,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of respiratory diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adding, “We know we’re not tracking every single one of them.”
Only a tiny fraction of those million cases have been tested, Dr. Schuchat said. The estimate is based on testing plus telephone surveys in New York City and several other locales where the new flu has hit hard.
The flu has now spread to many areas of the country, Dr. Schuchat noted, and the C.D.C. has heard of outbreaks in 34 summer camps in 16 states. NY Times

Update June 16, 2009: Shoveling Hail In Sandals? Hail Storm Pounds Parts Of Garden State With Several Inches; Residents Watch In Amazement As Plows Clear Streets

hail
Parts of New Jersey were pummeled by a massive hail storm on Monday afternoon, leaving it looking as if a June blizzard blew through with inches of dime-sized pellets piling up.

Washington Township residents were seen on their driveways breaking out the snow shovels and officials sent out bulldozers to act as snow plows to clear the streets after severe thunderstorms pounded the region. Children were seen forming hail balls.

CBS 2 HD’s Christine Sloan was in Washington Township and spoke to stunned residents. This as the snow and ice piled up around them.

It was a day for snow boots and a jacket as several inches fell in what’s being looked at as one freak storm.

Plowing snow, ice, whatever you want to call it on a street in Washington Township in June. It wasn’t an understatement to say folks in the neighborhood were shocked. CBS News

Update June 20, 2009: Heat advisory today: It’ll feel like 110 Triple-digit highs forecast over weekend as high heat arrives early this summer.
For Floridians, stifling heat is a summer reality. But a 101-degree Saturday afternoon? That’s out of the ordinary.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management has issued a heat advisory for the area, expecting the heat index to soar as high as 110 degrees today and Sunday.
“The heat index is a value of how the temperature feels and the amount of stress it puts on the human body,” said Al Sandrik, a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville.
The service issued the advisory from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. Ben Nelson, state meteorologist with the Division of Emergency Management, said he expects the Weather Service to issue an advisory for Sunday as well. The weather pattern causing the heat should continue through Tuesday, he said. Gainesville Sun

* The economy will fall badly again, even lower than last time as interest rates will begin to soar and more and more taxes are leveled against American consumers.

Update June 5, 2009: Interest rates soar on jobs data, putting housing at risk
The Treasury bond market is in cardiac arrest today over the May employment report: Yields are soaring, dealing another blow to investors who’ve been hiding out in government bonds — and threatening another big jump in mortgage rates.
If rising home loan rates price more buyers out of the market, sellers will have to respond by cutting asking prices. Anyone have a better idea?
The 10-year T-note yield has surged to 3.84% from 3.71% on Thursday. The 2-year T-note has rocketed to 1.25% from 0.96%. Yields now are the highest since mid-November. LA Times
Update June 5, 2009: Obama’s Tax Policies. Citizens for Tax Justice (CTJ) has joined forces with a broad coalition of organizations called Rebuild and Renew America Now (RRAN) to promote a simple message: Congress has a whole lot of options to raise revenue to pay for health care reform and other initiatives without unfairly impacting low- or middle-income people and without harming the economy.

These progressive revenue options include both the tax changes included in President Obama’s fiscal year 2010 budget proposals as well as additional options formulated in a recent report by CTJ and endorsed by Health Care for America Now (HCAN) and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). (See CTJ’s report on the President’s tax proposals and CTJ’s report on additional revenue options to fund health care reform.) Tax Justice Digest

Update June 19, 2009: Obama Healthcare Soda Tax; Obama Healthcare Tax Increases
Democrats are fighting right now over the Obama healthcare plan; as lawmakers seek to find ways to pay for his estimated $1.6 trillion dollar debacle. A soda tax looks like a scenario that could play out, costing tax payers 10 cents more per can of soda; other taxes are also being bandied about.
In either case, new taxes are in our future. A soda tax of about 10 cents a can as well as other sugary drinks is just the tip of the iceberg. Charlie Rangel and the House Ways and Means Committee are weighing their options as we speak. Doesn’t that just make you feel all tingly inside?
Tobacco, Alcohol, probably a fatty foods tax; not to mention an increase in the Medicare payroll tax and some even talk about a type of national sales tax of 1.5%; didn’t Obama say that nobody who made less than $250,000 dollars would have any type of tax increase whatsoever? Oh, I forgot, he didn’t know about the serious financial crisis we would be in, and universal healthcare is supposed to help fix that. RightPundits by Shannon Bell

Update June 27, 2009: House passes historic ‘cap-and-trade’ energy bill. GOP leader Boehner says bill would hike electricity and gasoline prices ( NEW TAXES )
“The American people have the right to know what is in this legislation and, more importantly, what impact it will have on middle-class families and small businesses. In just an hour, we raised serious questions about the true consequences of this legislation for Americans’ jobs and all of our economy,” Boehner said.
Boehner argued the bill, which Republicans have dubbed “cap-and-tax,” legislation, would raise electricity and gasoline prices.
Obama made a fresh pitch for the bill earlier Friday during a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, calling it a “critical” measure “that will promote a new generation of clean, renewable energy in our country.”
But even members of Obama’s own party — such as House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson of Minnesota — expressed deep reservations about the measure, saying it would saddle farmers and consumers with burdensome obligations. MarketWatch

Update June 21, 2009:

Update June 23, 2009: Obama’s Deafening Silence on Iran
When the east Europeans were trying to free themselves from the shackles of Soviet rule two decades ago, President Ronald Reagan minced no words, daring Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall” in his famous 1987 speech given in West Berlin. Indeed, Reagan and his successors made sure that the United States was unequivocal in its support of pro-democracy advocates in countries all over the world: Poland, the former Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Albania, Myanmar, Venezuela — the list goes on and on.
This historical backdrop offers a stark contrast to Barack Obama’s weak response to Iran’s fraudulent June 12 election – and to Tehran’s subsequent brutal crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators. Immediately after the election, when he had a chance to unambiguously set a tone as a defender of free elections, Obama could only bring himself to bleat:
“It’s not productive, given the history of U.S.-Iranian relations, to be seen as meddling. I do believe that something has happened in Iran where there is a questioning of the kinds of antagonistic postures towards the international community. How that plays out over the next several days and several weeks is something ultimately for the Iranian people to decide.”
It was a weak, wishy-washy statement that only an Ayatollah could love.
The White House followed up by pathetically expressing admiration for the “vigorous debate” that was taking place among Iranians.
Too little, too late. For fear of offending the Mullahs, Obama had missed his moment to lead, and now was following the lead — of the Europeans. Unlike Obama, they were strong and swift in condemning Ahmadinejad’s “victory” and the Iranian government’s violent response to the subsequent street protests.
On June 16, just four days after the election, French President Nicolas Sarkozy stated that “the extent of the fraud is proportional to the violent reaction.” That same day, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Iran’s government thuggery was utterly ”unacceptable.” British Prime Minister Gordon Brown bluntly condemned ”the repression and the brutality” in Iran. And German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Iran’s leaders to “allow peaceful demonstrations, allow free reporting of events, stop the use of violence against demonstrators, and free imprisoned people.” NewsReal

Predictions : https://psychicinsights.wordpress.com/2009/05/24/219/

* Expect the flu to go to a full Pandemic and come back in the Fall and Spring in a more dangerous form. Do not take this flu lightly as it will mutate and become deadly. Take time to learn about it and to be prepared for it.

Update: June 11, 2009: The World Health Organization raised its flu alert level to 6 Thursday, declaring the first flu pandemic in 41 years.

So what does that mean? Flu pandemics occur when a strain of the flu virus mutates into a new form that can spread from human to human and to which people have no natural immunity.
Because there is no widespread immunity to the new strain of H1N1, its effects are worse than the normal flu. It is also difficult to predict which age groups will be worst hit by a pandemic strain.
Why is swine flu a bigger concern than seasonal flu, which sickens hundreds of thousands and kills between 30,000 and 40,000 people in the U.S. each year?
Scientists say it’s because swine flu is killing not only those in “high risk” groups, i.e. the elderly, the very young and those with compromised immune systems, it’s also killing healthy people. Fox News

* Summer will be very, very hot across most of the nation but many places will see below normal temperature levels at times. Unusual weather patterns will cause this Summer to be a nightmare. = (

Update: June 12, 2009- So far, June’s chill is one for the records
The cloudy, chilly and rainy open to June here has been the talk of the town. So far this June is running more than 12 degrees cooler than last year, and the clouds, rain and chilly lake winds have been persistent. The average temperature at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport through Friday has been only 59.5 degrees: nearly 7 degrees below normal and the coldest since records there began 50 years ago.

More bad weather is on the way Saturday with a cold rain expected to linger through the bulk of the morning. Rainfall could be heavy — especially north of the city, which would be a reversal of Thursday’s deluge that targeted the southern suburbs. WGN tv Weather Center.

* Obama will make some major mistakes and people’s attitudes will change towards him becoming more negative.

Update: June 10, 2009- Some Israelis Insulted by Obama Picture . Israeli TV newscasters Tuesday night interpreted a photo taken Monday in the Oval Office of President Obama talking on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an “insult” to Israel.

They saw the incident as somewhat akin to an incident last year, when the Iraqi reporter threw a shoe at President Bush in Baghdad.

Some Israeli newscasters are crying foul over this photo of President Barack Obama, snapped in the Oval Office on Monday as he spoke on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The journalists on Tuesday called the image insulting, since in many parts of the region, it is considered an insult to show someone the sole of your shoe. CBS News

Note from Pernel: For those of you who come here to read my web site and my blogs, please take extra precautions from this flu  H1N1 during this upcoming fall and winter. Even though it seems mild now and like it is no big deal, it can mix with the bird flu H5N1 (or other flues) and become very deadly. Go to some of the informational sites and read on how to prepare and stock up your homes. Use the worst case scenario and then if it does not happen, be happy about it.

A special prayer that may help protect you

I am still here and so is Bird Flu

March 1, 2008

I’m Back!!  Miss me? Lol I took a break for a bit while I have been researching the elections, watching them on the edge of my seat and screaming at the television reporters. I decided the entire thing is rigged anyways so I gave up on it.  Oh, if anyone cares that we of Florida and Michigan are not allowed to be in this election here is a petition I encourage you to sign to seat our delegates NOW.  It does not matter what state you live in, you can sign it from any state.   http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/seatourdelegates/index.html

Today I started reading up on the bird flu and was totally shocked.  The first thing I saw was 100 people dead in Indonesia.  Now, having taken a bit of a break and coming back to this bird flu topic was quite an eye opener.  I was totally overwhelmed.

As I was reading, it seems that this H5N1 thing is everywhere.  It is not slowing down and is not stopping. Even after years of fighting this bird flu, it is still on the move.  I sat back and thought, “Gee, it didn’t go away.”

Somehow this struck me as an odd thought which made me wonder if I actually did think it would go away?  This avian flu has been around for years, it is constantly refusing to leave no matter how many millions of birds are culled. It is changing and mutating. Every time we think okay, it is quiet, this mega flu starts to scream again.

I’m sorry, I am disturbed that there are 100 people dead out of 124 cases in Indonesia.  That is a death rate of almost 80 percent.  I rolled that number off my tongue several times…EIGHTY PERCENT death rate!  It was not a pleasant sensation.  Now what if this was a pandemic?  There are six billion people (give or take a few) in the world and at 80 percent death rate if this went across the board with an 80 percent death rate (which it will not) it would be utter, total devastation.

Today was a start after a little break here for me. I’m back at this again. I do have to admit, it scared the heebie zeebies out of me when I started reading all the posts and articles on it.  What also struck me was how easy it was for me to close my eyes and just pretend it had gone away.  By throwing myself into the primary presidential elections, I did not have to watch the horror of this play out in front of me day by day.  I think now I have a little better understanding of why people do not want to hear about it, do not want to acknowledge it as it is so easy to just close your eyes and pretend it doesn’t exist.  Today was a wake up call for me when I read the bird flu reports.  I just can’t imagine with the over whelming feeling I had today how bad it is going to be for people who are not prepared.

Indonesian health officials say the five people – two men, two women and a nine-year-old boy – have all succumbed in the past eight days since contracting the H5N1 virus, responsible for outbreaks of bird flu around the world in recent years. So far, 102 of the 124 confirmed bird flu cases in Indonesia have been fatal, according to a statement issued by WHO. The South-East Asian nation is one of a handful of countries where the virus is enzootic, which means it is continuously present and being passed among poultry. United Nations Org.

Two Visiting Scientists’ thoughts on Bird Flu

February 8, 2008

I had two clients stop in last week and both of them were scientists, one from Greece and the other one from Bolivia.  I asked them if they were familiar with the H5N1 virus. Both of these ladies were a bit shocked when their psychic started talking to them about the H5N1. I simply pointed to my wall full of degrees and said I am a lot more then just a fortune tellerJ  They both started to laugh and that is when they really opened up.

We got into a deep discussion about this bird flu virus.   These two women are specialists on insect bugs and the spread of their illnesses. One of them is working on Dengue fever and monitoring its spread.  She told me that the H5N1 is a considerable risk to the general population. It is an even greater risk since people are so unaware of it.  We got into a lot of the scientific applications of the bird flu illness. She said the people that she works with believe it will just jump, fast and unexpectedly.  I have to agree with this assessment as I believe it will just start and there will be no stopping it when it does.

The scientist from Greece showed genuine concern over the H5N1.  She told me that she is going back to her country soon. She wants to try and raise alert levels there with the people.  The Dengue Hemorrhagic form is her specialty. She thinks people need to know it is out of control right now. But she also wants her people to know about the bird flu and its possibilities.   She considers H5N1 as one of the greatest risks to humanity along with global warming.

The Bolivia scientist shared her belief with me that when this bird flu does strike, it shall be so sudden that it will take the world by storm.  She believes it is being down played, people are no where near prepared and it will be a nightmare out there.  Upon returning back to her home country, she is going to let people there know about the bird flu and how to prepare for it.

We discussed the mutation of the virus, the possibility of treating the ground with some form of chemical inhibitor that may stop the virus at places birds meet, the over use of Tamiflu and the fact that this H5N1 virus is becoming drug resistant.  We also had a discussion about the survivors from the Spanish pandemic in 1918 and subsequent pandemics.  The one in the 1950’s was also a form of avian flu. Because of this, we all agreed that some of the people who survived that one may also survive this upcoming one. They may have more resistance even though the viruses are very different.   There is a genetic code where some people are immune to these types of illnesses since they do not have the proper receptors for the bird flu virus to connect to their cells.  Both of these scientists seemed very concerned about this H5N1 virus. They want to raise the level of people’s awareness and its implications.  They both believe that the possible risks are not being presented properly to the public. They stressed this over and over again.

After hours of discussions, we reached the conclusions that people are in the dark, are not being properly informed, that this bird flu virus is very real and it is not going away any time soon.  Trying to fight it with everything we have is a good preventative measure which gives people time to prepare.  As they left, they both gave me a hug and told me I am in the wrong business. They even asked me to consider stepping up into their world of science.  I said, “Nope, I like meeting people like you so I will stay right where I am. Besides I don’t like bugs.”  lol.

Children and Bird Flu pandemic

January 28, 2008

I’m a little moody today and have spent most of the day reading reports of bird flu.  Of particular interest to me are the reports from Scott McPherson regarding what is going on in West Bengal.  What a nightmare is happening there.

http://www.scottmcpherson.net/display/ShowJournal?moduleId=1366394&categoryId=116462

After reading these reports about thousands of people reporting bird flu like symptoms, herds of goats dying from a severe respiratory illness, the massive bird culling going on and the fear that these people are going through, it really hit me hard as I thought more about it. What if that was happening right here in the United States, right now, this very minute?

I decided t o ask my 13 year old son, JJ, and my 9 year old grandson, Eli, about their thoughts on bird flu and if it was here, right now what would they do?   Both of them got really quiet when I asked them about the Bird Flu.  Eli said he feels it will not happen here.  JJ concurred and said we live in America and we have the best hospitals, the best games and the best doctors.  Eli agreed and said that the military would shoot it.  I asked them what if I had it, their Dad had it and everyone in the house died from bird flu and they were the only ones left living?   JJ looked stricken and said, “I would be terrified.”   Then he added, “I’m not the best at answering ‘what if’ questions and it can’t happen here in America.”  I asked him further, “Why do you think it will not happen here?”  He told me he feels it is in the land where chickens roam free and are in people’s houses.  Eli said he thinks it can’t cross the water and we don’t have any chickens roaming around so it can’t get here.  I explained to them that this H5N1 illness is a flu, just like the regular flu. So the bird flu could someday be caught and spread like the regular flu.  They both told me they would stay home.  JJ said he could chew on wood to survive if he had to.

Then I hit them with the real question for a kid their age to relate to, “What if there was no electric for up to three months at a time?”  I made sure they knew and explained that there would be no game systems, no TV, no computers, no lights, no washer and dryer, no cold food and no microwave.  That floored them.  They could not grasp the idea that they would not be able to access the regular everyday things they were used to.  JJ thought for a while and came back to tell me that he could play his PSP and we could get a nuclear generator to run the power for the house.  Next, he added that if we can’t afford a nuclear generator then we could get a windmill or make the entire roof solar panels to charge up the batteries for the game systems or get the computer to work.  Eli said he could play with his toys and have camping at night with flashlights to keep the monsters away.  Then both boys said that they could play a board game if they really had to.

As I listened to them discussing this and how they would handle a bird flu crisis, I realized that the terror that the children in America would face will be extreme.  Everything they are use to will be disrupted and they will find themselves in an entirely different harsh life style than they were accustomed to. It is hard for them to comprehend what a bird flu pandemic is, what it could realistically do and the massive effects it can have. They will face death straight in their faces with little or no understanding. The monsters they fear at night will take on entirely new faces.  I realized it is time to talk to my children and to inform them.  I also realized it is time to make sure a plan is in place in case the unthinkable happens and everyone in the household does die except them. They need to be prepared as well as the adults should be for the possibility of this bird flu pandemic to lessen their fear, help to contain their terror and to know what to do if the unthinkable does happen.

Close Contact vs Human to Human bird flu

Today I was sitting here and began to ponder what is truly going on in Egypt.  We know there have been five deaths recently from the H5N1. But I have also heard there are currently 105 suspected cases of bird flu there and that 25 people are going to the hospitals every day with suspected cases.   This is a map that shows geographically where all the bird flu cases in Egypt are.  It is amazing to see how close they all are to each other.  I found the map on the H5N1 site at: http://crofsblogs.typepad.com/h5n1/   along with a very good article written there from Scott McPherson on the current situation in Egypt.

Check out this Map with all the numerous Bird Flu Human reported cases in Egypt:

As I read over these articles, I couldn’t stop myself from wondering, is the deal with the “No Human to Human contact” which is now being called “close contact” between family members.  Am I stupid or missing something here?  My logic, if I have this illness and I am a human, next one of my family members who is also a human gets it, then it is human to human transmission. After all, I am not a chicken so why call it close contact?  Is it close contact of the first kind? Or close contact of the third kind?  What is the deal on the contextual play with words?  Bottom line, it is human to human transmission if a family member gives it to another family member.  This stuff is confusing enough with little or mixed up information being brought in from other countries. So why not lessen the confusion and call a spade a spade?

Then I am reading articles that claim that H5N1 is past its time and will never be a threat of a pandemic.  Really?  Tell that to the people in Indonesia, Egypt, China and all the other parts of the world that are suffering from it.  No one knows what this thing is going to do.  We have never seen this before. We have never had to deal with this type of bird flu. Even though we keep killing millions of infected birds, bird flu keeps right on coming.

Read All About It!! Bird Flu Human to Human Transmissions

Earlier today I was reading all the hype on Pakistan being the first country to have a confirmed human to human transmission case of the H5N1.  I wondered what happened to all of the other ones I read about throughout the past few months or did I just trip over my dog, bump my head and imagined they existed? So I started looking for them.  I could have put down hundreds of articles here about the human to human bird flu transmission but just added a few.  I guess the difference with the recent cluster in Pakistan is it is the first confirmed one of human to human.  But there have been several other reports about human to human transmission, not just this one isolated incident in Pakistan.

This link is from the Wall Street Journal on 12/05/07.  It has the victims and what they died from listed.

I noticed when I looked it over that there were several clusters reported in several places. Though there has been no information as to what actually happened to the infected persons.

I kept searching and found several articles of interest.  This one says there is confirmed human to human bird flu transmission in Vietnam:
