Politics and News Media Bashing

Usually I do not care about anything political but today I am angry and hurt, very hurt.  I watched the Florida elections and was appalled by the way the News people at FOX News handled it.

First Brit Hume acted disgusted when Hillary Clinton won the Democratic race. He commented that Hillary Clinton won then quickly added but it doesn’t  mean anything.  Excuse me!  It means plenty to the thousands of people who voted for her!  Then when Obama sent his little supposed funny message of ‘zero Hillary zero Obama’, Brit Hume actually smirked about it?  He thought that was funny?  I thought it was a slap in the face to Florida voters.

Is it not enough that the people of Florida have to sit back and endure that fact that our voices have been silenced? We the individual voter had nothing to do with it?  Why was it necessary to make the remark as soon as Hillary Clinton won the election to announce that Hillary won then quickly add, “But it doesn’t mean anything.”  Why was it necessary for FOX News to make remarks such as, “These were the early votes and it was done before the Endorsement of Ted Kennedy and before the elections in South Carolina.” Why didn’t you bring back up the point to your viewers that Bobby Kennedy Jr. and his sister had endorsed Hillary? How about the remark, “This is nothing more than a ‘beauty contest’ for Hillary Clinton” or “She is after free exposure from the press.”  These hateful, disrespectful, Clinton bashing remarks were very painful to the people who just voted for her.

How about giving her just a minute for her victory speech and then cutting her off? Did FOX News ever stop to think about how the people of Florida feel?  Did you stop for one second and think that maybe those people who voted for her WANTED to hear her speak, wanted to know what she had to say and were actually HAPPY she came here when no other candidate on the democratic side bothered to give them a second glance?  Was it not enough that over two million people voted or are they worth nothing as Obama says it is all about the delegates?  The world was made to think that the people of Florida voted for Hillary because Obama did not get a chance to campaign here?  Hillary did visit here but that was ignored. Obama did also by getting his commercial ads run here for his nationwide campaign thus that fact was ignored.

Why are we being shown one side that Hillary is a monster, her husband is a jerk and Obama is a saint?  I am so sick of having Obama driven down my throat it makes me want to turn Republican. Key note here, I don’t care that Ted Kennedy endorsed Obama, I do not care that he won South Carolina and I do not care about Obama’s bashing episodes with Hillary Clinton. I do not care if Bill Clinton is saying bad things about Obama and I don’t care who is endorsing who and I don’t care if Obama is upset over the Obama girl. This did not influence me or other people who want to know what the issues truly are.  Obama says he is about change….what change? Changing the president? Changing diapers? What is this ‘change’ he is talking about as Obama has never made it clear and I want to know what it is.  Clinton says she wants to take the people with her to the white house. Okay, so I want the master bedroom. With all the bias on the news it is hard to get the answers as it seems to be nothing but parading one candidate, ignoring and bashing the other.  I even heard a woman in Tennessee ask Hillary Clinton the other night on television as to why the media hates her so much?  She responded that the lady would have to ask media.

Irregardless of what the news people think of Hillary Clinton, the people voted for her. Those people had a right to feel good about their vote or at least to have something said in a positive manner about their choice.  When Obama won South Carolina it was announced in minutes and I thought the news caster was going to jump out of his chair and start screaming “Yes Obama!! Oh Yes!!”  But last night, when Hillary strongly won Florida, it was ignored, pushed aside, down played, treated like a disease. All the people who voted for Clinton were treated like they were not smart enough to make an intelligent decision because they voted early? How does this account for the people who came out to vote that day?

The people of Florida are not ignorant, we know how to read, watch Television and we are as informed as the rest of the nation.  We went to vote on January 29, 2008, despite  the fact that we were told it meant nothing.  All the primary candidates were on the ballots, so why are we made to feel like second class citizens by the news media when we are already being punished? Florida represents a wide diversity of the population in the United States. Even if it did not matter to the news media, it darned sure mattered to us. It mattered enough since Florida voters went out to vote when everyone thought we would stay home.

It’s not that it didn’t matter on a personal level. It’s that it actually didn’t matter. Clinton will get no delegates from the Florida vote. Delegates are “what matter” in the primaries. Don’t get me wrong. I feel for the citizens, especially caring, voting citizens like you. The fact that your state elections committee made a decision that disenfranchised your vote is something you need to remember when it comes time to voting in your state. But you can hardly blame Fox News for stating what everybody knows: you voted your heart out, but your vote, this time, didn’t count. Be angry though, be really angry. You’ll need that anger to persuade your neighbors to vote your current elections committee out of office the next time you get a chance.

Can I ask one question though? I mean, you know that Fox News is a conservative, Republican-biased news source, so, why were you even watching Fox News for unbiased reporting on Clinton? It seems you were just asking for a reason to get angry.

It’s pathetic isn’t it? The media seems to be doing everything they can to discourage people from voting for Hillary and encouraging them to vote for Obama. I’m sorry, but I just don’t see the attraction. To me it seems just another case of the younger, good looking, smooth talking man, beining promoted over the woman. Who has probably worked twice as hard as he has and with a whole lot more experience. Mike Barnicle said on MSNBC the other day that “Hillary reminds all men of their first wives, standing outside the courthouse on the day of their divorce”. It just makes me wonder what they did to their first wives that either they (1)deserved to be divorced, or (2)they left for a younger version. It’s not just FOX or MSNBC though. I signed a petition from media matters the other day when they were complaining about some of the things that Chris Matthews said, like “the only reason Hillary is where she is now is because her husband cheated on her”. As if nothing she did counted for anything.

I am a republican and I have to admit that I do agree with what you are saying here. It is not about what the news people think, it is about what the voters want. I was watching last night and it is apparent tht the news does not want Hillary to win. It is frustrating as we want to know what the other side is doing also, what are their views and it is hard to get information from the press. I can tell you all about Obama and I find it disgusting that Clinton is not given the time of day by the press except to bash her. It looks bad on the press. I also argee that the people of Florida were wrongfully punished for nothing they did. It was good for my side but totally unfair for the other side.

    Hey JimPanzee,

FOX News claims to be fair and balanced and I liked their ticker as it is easy to read. So I thought I would give them a chance. If they are so Republican biased, why aren’t they treating Obama the same way they treat Hillary???

  8. JimPanzee Says:

Their claim to be “fair and balanced” not withstanding, there is no serious debate on whether or not Fox is Republican-biased or not. You shouldn’t need any further proof than the fact that one of their lead news anchors became the White House press agent, but if you want it, it’s out there.

Their Republican bias has nothing whatsoever to do with their hatred of Clinton, which you properly pointed out. Their hatred of Clinton is rooted in their sexism. And sexism, for what its worth, is a trait that has appeared during this election cycle in both liberal and conservative news sources, so I’m not denying that you’re right about that (although it is far worse in the conservative press, which Fox is a part of).

I was just asking why someone who clearly favors Democratic candidates would think that Fox News would do anything but treat Democrats in general (and Clinton in particular) with disrespect. You like their ticker? OK. I’m just saying, you turn on Fox, don’t be shocked to see lopsided journalism. They have their opinions and they aren’t afraid to tell them to you. They hate Democrats, but they REALLY hate Clinton.

And honestly, it’s not like they’re treating Obama very well. They’re treating him better; but “better” is not the same as “good.” Fox News is a large reason why most of the country knows that Obama’s middle name is Hussein, and it’s also why most people (erroneously) believe he was educated in a madrassa and doesn’t say the Pledge of Allegiance.

As a journalist for more than 20 years, I share your righteous indignation over the slanted and clearly biased coverage of this campaign.

As a lifelong Kennedy Democrat , I am also appalled by the media’s hailing of Obama as “the next JFK.”

If someone sits and tells me they’re objective and honest all the time, I tend not to trust them. Editorializing while reporting the news is simply unethical no matter what network does it; but people just don’t care anymore. This division is a big factor, or symptom, in the downfall of this country. We’ve gone from a “nothing to fear but fear itself” mentality to a cowering in the corner in fear motivation. Fear is a paralyzing and polarizing force and will only divide us further. As for Britt Hume, washed up, old and cranky.

Pernel I just wanted to tell you that according to Dan Abrams on MSNBC you are totally right here about the media bias of the Clinton’s. They did a show on it last night and the first picture they showed was Brit Humes laughing at Hillary Clinton for going to Florida. They talked about Florida and how the media ignored Clinton and how she took the state by 17 percent, more votes for her than any other candidates. The panel talked about how the media hates the Clintons, ignores them, put a muzzle on Bill Clinton, tear them down, hunt them down and delight in twisting Bill Clinton’s words. They showed a clip of Obama viciously attacking Hillary yesterday and it so outraged the Clinton campaign that they responded before the speech was aired. When they went over his attacks point by point it was found that three out of the five slanders he used were false but it was not reported as such in the media. They talked about how Obama did in fact turn away from Hillary Clinton and snubbed her. His campaign changed their story from he did not know she was there to he did not want to rub it in her face that he was there with Ted Kennedy so he turned his back on her. They showed clips of Anderson Cooper bashing Hillary and said the manner in which Brit Humes acted when Hillary won the state of Florida was horrible. They came right out and said Fox news and other news stations are bashing the Clintons, hates them and are deliberately not giving them coverage. They said Fox news and others are on a deliberate smear campaign of the Clintons, are biased and unfair to the Clintons and to the state of Florida. I don’t know you Pernel but I have heard from several people that you are very shy and this was a hard article for you to write. I wanted to let you know that you are not the only person who felt this way about the way Brit Hume handled this and the way the people in Florida and Hillary Clinton have been treated by the Media. Don’t feel bad about writing this article, you were the first to stand up and say what a lot of people all ready know and would not speak out about.

I agree with riverbird, turn it off and leave it off. I will not watch Fox news any more and have switched to MSNBC as they have been giving fair coverage so far as I have seen. Good job on speaking out on this Pernel. As a Florida voter I felt the same way you did and I know a lot of people in Michigan who feel the same also. Keep up the good work and never fear speaking the truth.
